Vienna on the whole may bring in performance companies that are maybe a little better than Budapest or Prague. I don't have such a discerning ear that I can tell, but if someone were to tell me this I would be inclined to believe it. After all, there are more tourists "of a type" with more money than you will find in Budapest or Prague. Little did we know that our travels had taken a surprising twist of fate. Oddly enough, without even knowing it, we’d set off to visit three ‘competing’ European tourist cities in short succession. It wasn’t our plan, we didn’t even know there was a behind-the-scenes rivalry between them; it just worked out that our travels would take In April, May, September and October, things can still be mild and warm. There are fewer visitors hitting the mainstay sites like the Prague Castle. Hotel rates drop considerably to boot, and you're more likely to get bargains on flights into town. I have strong feelings we will be changing it to next year. We chose to do Budapest first only because we wanted the extra time to see the city. Our flight should arrive in Budapest by mid morning, so that gives us 2 1/2 days to explore. If we had gone from Prague to Budapest, we would lose that time. Prague is smaller and more touristy, but has plenty of sights. We had a great time wandering around the city, other than for the painful feet from walking on the cobblestones. Budapest is more of an active city with fewer crowds as others have pointed out. It takes a bit more research and planning to do Budapest properly. Accommodations are 1.5 times more expensive in Prague than in Budapest. Food can be even twice the price. One thing they have in common is the cheap local beer, between 1 and 2 Euro based on the pub. Usually the flight ticket to Prague is cheaper, just because there is more competition. t4Dz.
