With a D40, you're pretty much stuck with the (slow) kit lens; faster lenses like a 50/1.4 or 85/1.8 would help except they don't. focus on a D40. On a flyer, I just picked up a 50/1.8 for my D40, took a couple. test shots in my home at night without flash, and found manual. focusing wasn't too difficult.
